The trial of an elite Kenyan police unit accused of the wrongful death of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif began at the Kajiado High Court in Nairobi. The petitioners claim that Sharif’s killing was a premeditated “assassination” planned in Pakistan. Sharif, a critic of Pakistan’s military leadership, was killed in October 2022 when police opened fire on the car he was traveling in at a checkpoint near Nairobi. While Nairobi police initially expressed regret and claimed it was a case of mistaken identity, Pakistani investigators later concluded that it was a planned assassination. Sharif’s widow, Javeria Siddique, filed the case against the Kenyan police unit, known as the General Service Unit (GSU), involved in the shooting. The Kenyan police allege that Sharif failed to stop at a roadblock, but his family and Pakistani investigators dispute this, arguing that the killing was planned in Pakistan. The plaintiffs accuse Kenyan authorities of failing to prosecute the officers involved in Sharif’s death and demand a public apology to the family. Two Kenyan-based Pakistani businessmen have been charged with involvement in the killing by Islamabad police. The case has received international criticism from rights groups.
