The United Nations has issued a warning that it may take up to 14 years to clear the rubble and unexploded bombs in Gaza, following unprecedented levels of destruction caused by Israel’s war in October. No buildings have been spared, with homes, schools, mosques, and hospitals all suffering damage or destruction.

The UN’s mine action agency has reported that 37 million tonnes of debris now cover the Gaza Strip after more than six months of devastating conflict. The clearance process will be lengthy and complicated due to the presence of unexploded bombs and ammunition scattered throughout the area.

For Palestinians living in this hazardous environment, the prospect of returning and rebuilding their homes safely seems uncertain. Host Folly Bah Thibault discusses the situation with guests Jonathon Guthrie from Norwegian People’s Aid, Federico Dessi from Humanity & Inclusion, and Raja Khalidi from the Palestine Economic Policy Research Institute.
