Imran Khan, the incarcerated PTI Chairman, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking post-arrest bail in the cipher case. The case against Khan, registered under the Official Secrets Act of 1923, accuses him of making public the contents of a confidential diplomatic cable. Khan has assured the Supreme Court that he is willing to provide reasonable surety and promises not to abscond or tamper with prosecution witnesses. His previous bail plea was rejected by the Islamabad High Court on October 16. The petition argues that bail should not be used as a form of punishment and that each application should be carefully considered based on the relevant facts and circumstances. It also states that citizens’ liberty is protected by the Constitution and emphasizes that false cases are being fabricated to settle personal scores against Khan. The petition criticizes the high court for engaging in a detailed evaluation rather than a preliminary assessment and accuses the interior secretary and the Federal Investigating Agency of orchestrating the cipher case for political victimization. It highlights how the Foreign Office, the original recipient of the cipher telegram, has been kept out of the case and suggests that the interior secretary, controlled by the then interior minister, has taken on the role of complainant for settling political scores. The petition concludes that Khan should be granted bail due to this objectionable conduct.
