The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI) held intra-party elections on the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and elected Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as the new chairman. Gohar won the position unopposed after being nominated by ex-PTI chief Imran Khan. Omer Ayub Khan was elected as the party secretary-general unopposed, and provincially Munir Ahmed Baloch, Haleem Adil Sheikh, Ali Amin Gandapur, and Dr Yasmin Rashid were elected as party presidents. PML-N criticized the elections as a “selection, not an election,” and Akbar S. Babar, one of the founding members of PTI, announced plans to approach the ECP against the conduct of the intra-party polls. The ECP had previously annulled PTI’s intra-party polls held in June the previous year, and the party’s decision to hold new elections on the ECP’s directives was seen as a sign of the party’s commitment to democracy and the rule of law.
