Former Pakistani Speaker and Minister Gohar Ayub sadly passes away

The former National Assembly speaker Gohar Ayub Khan, son of former President General Ayub Khan, passed away in Islamabad on Friday, according to family sources. He was 86 years old and survived by two sons and two daughters. His funeral will be held on Saturday at 3pm and he will be laid to rest in his native graveyard in Rehana village of Haripur.

Mr Khan served in the Pakistan Army and also as an aide-de-camp (ADC) for his father, the president. He entered politics in 1974 and had a successful political career. He was praised for his tenure as a speaker and for his resistance to the president’s order to dissolve the assembly. He also served in various government positions.

Leaders from various political parties expressed their condolences and paid tribute to Mr Khan for his services to the country. President Arif Alvi and caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar were among those who expressed grief over his demise.

PTI’s Central Media Department issued a statement expressing the party’s grief over Mr Khan’s loss and paying tribute to his services to the country. Various other political leaders and figures also expressed their condolences and paid tribute to Mr Khan.
