Relatives, friends, and supporters of Hamas captives have marched from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem demanding the immediate release of their loved ones and government action. Tens of thousands of protesters completed the five-day march to Jerusalem after rallying in front of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office to pressure the Israeli government for the release of about 240 captives held by Hamas in Gaza. The demonstrators are demanding the government prioritize bringing their loved ones home and expect the government to meet with them and explain their plan of action. The captives were taken during an attack on southern Israel, which resulted in large casualties on both sides. Concerns have been raised about the safety of the hostages in the midst of Israeli attacks on Gaza. Hamas has released a video of a captive who died in their custody, increasing anxiety among those seeking the release of the captives. Negotiations are being mediated by Qatar and Egypt, but many are frustrated by the lack of transparency from the government. There is a call for a ceasefire to safely return the hostages, but fears remain that this could allow Hamas to rearm. The priority remains the safe return of the captives to their families.
