Multiple social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger faced global outages on Tuesday, according to internet monitor Netblocks. Downdetector also confirmed the outages, reporting that tens of thousands of users were affected. The disruptions began around 10am Eastern Time with over 300,000 reports for Facebook and 40,000 reports for Instagram. Meta’s status dashboard showed that WhatsApp Business was also experiencing issues with around 200 reports on Downdetector. The outage was a top trending topic on X, formerly Twitter, with many users reporting being suddenly logged out of Meta-owned platforms. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone acknowledged the issue and stated they were working on resolving it. Netblocks clarified that the incident was not due to country-level internet disruptions. In Pakistan, reports of the outages spiked after 8pm, further limiting social media options due to the government’s restrictions on X. This outage came after a similar one in June 2023 affecting Facebook and Instagram.
