Former US ambassador to Pakistan, Richard Olson, is scheduled to be sentenced in a US court on Tuesday for his involvement in ethical violations. The case has gained attention due to allegations of improper conduct and relationships with Pakistani women.

Olson’s defense has argued that his partner, Muna Habib, had no knowledge or involvement in his business deals and stocks. They claim that she was unaware of any misconduct and maintain her innocence.

The controversy surrounding Olson’s actions came to light after a Washington Post report detailed his personal and diplomatic activities during and after his service. This report, however, has led to a media trial of Ms Habib, particularly in Pakistan.

The documentary evidence submitted to the court supports Olson’s claim that Ms Habib was not aware of his deals and stocks. It also highlights that their relationship was not that of a romantic nature at the time of the incidents in question.

It is important to note that Pakistani journalists had regular interactions with Ms Habib during her time in Washington. She was a journalist working for a Pakistani newspaper and had also worked for the BBC in Islamabad. The journalists were surprised to learn from a briefing at the Pakistani ambassador’s residence that she was married to Mr Olson.

The Washington Post article alleged that Olson had engaged in illicit relationships with multiple Pakistani women, including Muna Habib, while he was serving as the US ambassador in Islamabad. The article further claimed that Olson arranged for financial assistance to help Habib attend Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

While Olson retired in 2016 after a long and distinguished diplomatic career, the article revealed that he was investigated for failing to report a gift of diamond jewelry and for his affair with a journalist in Pakistan. Olson later pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges related to failing to disclose a first-class ticket and engaging in illicit lobbying after his retirement. The US Justice Department has characterized these incidents as part of a pattern of unethical behavior.

It is important to note that Muna Habib was not charged with any wrongdoing in connection with these incidents. Her relationship with Olson should not be a subject of public scrutiny and gossip. Ms Habib has categorically dismissed questions about her relationship with Olson as “salacious gossip,” expressing her frustration with the sensationalized media coverage.

The sentencing of Richard Olson will conclude this chapter, highlighting the need for ethical conduct among diplomats. It is crucial to respect the privacy and dignity of individuals involved in these cases, focusing on the facts and allowing justice to take its course.
