Ethiopia and Somaliland have reached an initial agreement that will allow Ethiopia to use the port of Berbera, paving the way for the landlocked country to have access to the Red Sea. The deal was signed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi, with Abiy describing it as “historic”. The agreement also includes plans for Ethiopia to recognize Somaliland as an independent nation and for Somaliland to have a stake in Ethiopian Airlines. This comes after months of regional tensions and mediation efforts to resolve disputes between Somalia and Somaliland.
