The surprising choice of Anwaarul Haq Kakar, a Senator from the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), as the eighth caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan has sparked debates among analysts, journalists, and politicians. Kakar, with his relatively low-profile and unexpected candidacy, will lead the interim government until a national election is held.

Former information minister Fawad Chaudhry expressed optimism, describing Kakar as an “honest, educated, and modest” Pakistani and considering his selection as good news for the country.

PTI Senator Ali Zafar also praised Kakar, highlighting his intelligence, articulation, and reasonable approach to politics. Zafar wished Kakar the best and commended his representation of Balochistan’s interests.

Political analyst Hasan Askari Rizvi suggested that Kakar’s limited political career and lack of strong affiliation with major parties could be an advantage. However, he noted that Kakar may face difficulties without the active support of the military establishment.

Analyst Ayesha Siddiqa speculated that Kakar’s association with courses at the National Defence University indicates his closeness to the military establishment, suggesting that he will prioritize their interests.

Columnist Niaz Murtaza criticized Kakar’s selection as a bad choice due to his alleged closeness to the military establishment and his party’s involvement in the next elections. Murtaza argued that Kakar’s lack of expertise in key areas such as the economy, security, and foreign affairs makes him an unfit candidate.

PPP Senator Saleem Mandviwalla congratulated Kakar on assuming the role of caretaker Prime Minister but expressed concerns about ensuring transparent elections during this demanding period. Another PPP leader, Faisal Karim Kundi, hoped that the election commission would conduct free and fair elections under Kakar’s leadership.

PPP’s Khursheed Shah’s reaction suggested reservations over Kakar’s selection, stating that they were not aware of his finalization and expressing a preference for another candidate. Shah acknowledged that Kakar could be remembered if he succeeded in ensuring transparent elections.

Overall, the selection of Anwaarul Haq Kakar as caretaker Prime Minister has attracted varied reactions, with some expressing optimism and support, while others voice reservations about his political affiliation and expertise in key areas. The interim government’s performance under Kakar’s leadership and its ability to oversee the upcoming elections will be closely watched.
