At least 33 people have been killed in a landslide caused by heavy rains in northwestern Colombia, officials said. Vice President Francia Marquez expressed deep regret over the tragedy, stating that most of the victims were children. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing for those still trapped. The mudslide occurred on a road connecting Quibdo and Medellin in the province of Choco on Friday afternoon, leading to dozens of injuries and several missing individuals. A specialized rescue group from the Colombian police has been working to assist survivors and recover bodies. Road closures have made it difficult for rescue crews to reach the most heavily impacted areas. President Gustavo Petro and the army have mobilized resources to support the affected region. The landslide in Choco followed more than 24 hours of intense rain, and the road has been closed by Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management. In December 2022, a landslide in the same area killed at least 27 people. Despite drought conditions in much of the country, the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology, and Environmental Studies has warned of the risk of heavy rains in the Amazon and several departments bordering the Pacific.
