The US State Department is warning American citizens to be cautious during the upcoming general elections in Pakistan on February 8. The advisory highlighted potential disruptions and safety concerns related to political activities leading up to election day, such as marches, rallies, and speeches. It emphasized the possibility of traffic congestion, transportation disruptions, and safety risks at political events, which have been targets for violence in the past.

US citizens planning to visit Pakistan were urged to stay vigilant and informed about the locations of political rallies in their planned areas. They were also advised to avoid crowded areas around polling stations on election day and to expect disruptions to internet and cellular services before, during, and after the elections.

Specific recommendations for US citizens included avoiding areas with large public gatherings, being cautious near demonstrations, reviewing personal security plans, monitoring local media for updates, maintaining a low profile, carrying identification, and cooperating with local authorities. The advisory also encouraged enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (Step) for security updates, with additional information available on the US Embassy’s official website.

The US State Department reaffirmed its commitment to offering timely information and support to American citizens in Pakistan and urged citizens to stay informed and take necessary precautions for their safety. US citizens in Pakistan were also provided with contact information for the US Embassy in Islamabad, the US Consulate Generals in Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar, and the State Department’s Consular Affairs in Washington.

Lastly, information was provided on how to find one’s constituency and location of their polling booth, including an option to SMS their NIC number to 8300 and visit the ECP website for candidate information.
