The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has voted overwhelmingly in support of a Palestinian bid to become a full UN member by recognizing them as qualified to join and recommending a favorable reconsideration by the UN Security Council. Membership decisions are ultimately made by the UN Security Council, and while the US vetoed a bid for full membership previously, this resolution grants Palestinians some rights and increased participation within the UNGA.
The breakdown of how each country voted shows the majority in favor of supporting Palestinian self-determination and future existence, with 143 countries voting for the resolution. There were 9 countries that voted against it, and 25 countries abstained from voting. This vote signifies a step towards Palestinian recognition and a potential future as the 194th Member of the United Nations.
