The United Nations has declared that the Gaza Strip is now a place where thousands of children are being buried, with fears of more dying from dehydration. Since Hamas fighters crossed the border on October 7, Israel has heavily bombarded the area. The Gaza Strip’s health ministry has reported that over 8,500 people, mostly civilians, have been killed by these strikes. The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) has expressed concern that the number of child deaths directly resulting from the bombings could increase. Unicef spokesman James Elder stated that their worst fears about the number of children killed, which started in the dozens and then rose to hundreds, have now reached thousands. He emphasized that the current situation in Gaza is a living hell for everyone, as there is a severe shortage of clean water, which is particularly jeopardizing the lives of infants. Unicef is urgently calling for a humanitarian ceasefire to allow safe and unrestricted access to aid, including water, food, medical supplies, and fuel. Elder warned that without these measures, even more innocent children would suffer and die. He also noted that without greater access to the Gaza Strip, the current death toll from attacks is just the beginning. Furthermore, Unicef reported 940 missing children, while the United Nations’ humanitarian agency stated that the situation is desperate, with little opportunity to rescue those trapped under rubble. The World Health Organization added that people in Gaza are not only dying from direct bombings but also from the worsening infrastructure and overcrowding, which is causing a significant public health crisis.
