Ukraine’s top commander has provided an update on the current situation on the eastern front, where Kyiv’s forces are outnumbered by Russia. Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskii stated that Ukrainian troops have had to retreat to new positions west of three villages due to Russia’s concentration of significant forces in the area. This comes as Ukraine awaits the delivery of new US weapons under a $61bn aid package.

Syrskii described the most difficult areas as west of Maryinka and northwest of Avdiivka, where the enemy has achieved some tactical success but not gained operational advantages. The Russian forces have committed four brigades to the assault in these areas.

The Ukrainian military is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the US aid, as it will help bridge the gap in firepower between the two sides. Moscow’s troops have been making slow advances since capturing Avdiivka, taking advantage of Ukrainian shortages.

On another front, the town of Chasiv Yar has become a key battleground due to its strategic location. Syrskii also mentioned an increase in Russian troops near Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, indicating a potential offensive in the north.

Despite the challenges, Syrskii reassured that reinforcements have been deployed to the most threatening areas. The situation remains tense as Ukraine prepares for potential developments in the coming days.
