UNHCR’s Goodwill Ambassador and Australian actress Cate Blanchett also called for the release of Israeli hostages and for European countries to exert pressure for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the conflict between Israel and Hamas. In a speech to the European Parliament, she expressed deep concern and sorrow over the deaths and destruction in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas conflict. She also emphasized the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and urged European countries to play their role in achieving this. Blanchett highlighted the plight of the hundreds of thousands of displaced people in Gaza who are in desperate need of shelter, food, and water, and stressed that an immediate ceasefire is crucial to address this humanitarian crisis. Additionally, she pointed out the shortage of water, food, and fuel in Gaza due to the blockade by Israel, as well as the closure of hospitals and the homelessness of over 600,000 people, leading to an international call for an immediate ceasefire.
