The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has been directed by the Sindh High Court (SHC) to fully restore the services of social media platform X (formerly Twitter) across the country. The disruptions have been ongoing for the past six days and have been reported in various cities. The directive was issued during a hearing today, following a petition filed by senior journalists through Advocate Abdul Moiz Jaferii. The petition argued that the restrictions on X were unlawful and violated constitutional rights. The disruptions began after a former Rawalpindi commissioner made allegations of election rigging. The United States has also called for the lifting of social media restrictions in Pakistan. During the hearing, it was revealed that the interior ministry denied issuing any directives regarding the suspension of X, and the PTA was instructed to fully restore the platform and provide detailed responses at the next hearing. The petition highlighted that the PTA’s actions were in violation of laws and rules governing its actions, and it called for the immediate restoration of public access to X while restraining the respondents from further arbitrary restrictions.
