The Saudi government has confirmed that it will be imposing new restrictions on alcohol imports within diplomatic consignments in an effort to counter the illicit trade of alcohol goods and products received by diplomatic missions. The new regulations will ensure that all diplomats of non-Muslim embassies have access to alcohol products in specified quotas, while respecting international diplomatic conventions. The vast majority of Saudi Arabia’s population will see little change, as alcohol consumption is prohibited by law in the kingdom. However, plans are in place to open an alcohol store in Riyadh exclusively for non-Muslim diplomats, with strict registration and quota requirements. The issue of alcohol availability in Saudi Arabia remains sensitive due to the prohibition of alcohol in Islam, but there have been speculations about potential changes as part of the country’s Vision 2030 reform agenda. Vision 2030 includes plans for development, job creation, and hosting international events, further fueling speculation about a potential lift or weakening of the alcohol ban.
