A report from The Associated Press (AP) on Saturday stated that three Kashmiris have been tortured to death while in army custody in Indian-occupied Kashmir (IOK). Locals and residents accused the army of arresting at least eight civilians for interrogation following an attack on two army vehicles that killed four and injured three soldiers. The report mentioned that the bodies showed signs of severe torture, and videos of the detainees being tortured spread online, triggering widespread anger.

The Indian army and the IOK government both responded to the incident, with the government conducting medico-legal formalities and initiating legal action. Protests erupted in Srinagar, and former IOK chief minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed concern over the killings, stating that Indian troops were committing the “worst kind of state terrorism.”

The report also mentioned a previous incident in July 2020 where the Indian military had initially claimed to have killed three Pakistani terrorists, but it later admitted that the victims were local residents and that soldiers had exceeded their powers. An officer was sentenced to life imprisonment for the killings, but his sentence was suspended by a military tribunal.

Additional input was provided by The Associated Press of Pakistan.
