World leaders discussed ways to increase the flow of urgently needed humanitarian assistance into Gaza. US President Joe Biden urged for the immediate release of hostages seized by Hamas in Israel during talks with the leader of Qatar, which has relations with the Palestinian group governing Gaza.

Biden discussed the urgent need for the release of all hostages held by Hamas and Israel’s decision to allow two tankers of diesel each day into Gaza. The leaders also spoke about the strategic relations between their countries and the need to strengthen them. Additionally, the Qatari Emiri Diwan stated that Sheikh Tamim had a call with Bahrain’s King to discuss developments in Gaza and other regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Qatar’s foreign minister also traveled to Manama for meetings with Bahrain’s crown prince and other top officials. During these meetings, both sides emphasized the need to stop the war in Gaza and protect civilians.

Biden expressed hope of reaching a deal to free the hostages, believed to include about 10 US citizens, following an infiltration by Hamas fighters into Israel and subsequent violence resulting in numerous casualties. Qatar has rejected moves by other Gulf Arab monarchies toward normalizing relations with Israel.
