President Dr Arif Alvi has reaffirmed his claim that he did not give his assent to the amendments to the Official Secrets Act and the Pakistan Army Act. In a statement on social media, he stated that he disagreed with the laws and did not sign the bills. He further claimed that he had instructed his staff to return the bills unsigned within the required timeframe, but they failed to do so and lied about it. The controversy surrounding the president’s claim led to the attempted replacement of his principal secretary, which resulted in a “revolt-like situation” among senior bureaucrats in the presidency. The amendments to the Army Act allowed for the punishment of individuals disclosing information prejudicial to Pakistan or the armed forces, while the amendments to the Official Secrets Act introduced a new offense for unauthorized disclosure of intelligence agency personnel’s identities. Alvi, during an interview, expressed his disappointment with PTI defections and reiterated his belief in Imran Khan’s patriotism. He also discussed his loyalty to Imran and questioned the timing of certain defections, suggesting the involvement of the caretaker government. Alvi also expressed doubts about the general elections taking place in January and emphasized the importance of free and fair elections for Pakistan’s progress.
