PPP leader Faisal Karim Kundi expressed that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is obligated to follow the Constitution and cannot postpone elections based on the desires of two political parties. This statement comes as the PPP emphasizes the need for timely elections. Recently, PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari called for an immediate announcement of an election date during a rally in Karachi. Bhutto-Zardari accused the ‘state’ of prioritizing the return of PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif over upholding democratic principles and sticking to the constitutionally-mandated deadline for general elections. Last month, the ECP revealed that general elections would take place in January of next year but did not specify a date. The JUI-F disapproved of the timing of the polls due to weather conditions, while the PML-N supported the ECP’s decision. In a previous statement, Nawaz mentioned that he would abide by the commission’s set date and referred to the necessary preparatory work, such as the census and delimitations. Today, Kundi released a statement criticizing the ECP for not yet announcing the election date and stating that delaying elections implies an attempt to manipulate the results. He emphasized that the ECP is bound by the Constitution and not influenced by the preferences of two individuals. Kundi asserted that the country should proceed with elections rather than repeatedly experimenting with selection processes. Ultimately, the choice of who to elect and reject should be left to the people.
