According to the police, three newborns were discovered in a garbage dump in Karachi’s North Nazimabad area. The bodies may have been used for “medical purposes by a medical institute” but were instead discarded in the garbage. Along with the infants, some medical instruments were also found. Typically, newborn bodies in the city are wrapped in shopping bags or bed sheets before disposal. The bodies were sent to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy, and the police are awaiting medical reports to proceed with legal action. In a report published in July, the Edhi Foundation revealed that they had buried 576 newborns in Karachi: 200 in 2021, 289 in 2022, and at least 87 in the first half of 2023. This conflicting information between official records and the foundation’s burials led the Sindh Police to issue instructions to register criminal cases for abandoned deceased newborns.
