Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi announced on Sunday that the joint investigation team (JIT) formed to probe a “malicious social media campaign” against Supreme Court judges was operating within the bounds of the law. The five-member JIT was established on January 16 by the interior ministry to look into the campaign against the judiciary. The investigation, conducted under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016, has identified around 500 social media accounts involved in the campaign and issued notices to 110 individuals, including 32 journalists and 22 politicians. The minister and FIA Director General Ishaq Jahangir clarified that the notices were issued in accordance with the law and provided individuals with an opportunity to clear up any misunderstandings. They also stated that not every notice would result in the registration of a first information report (FIR) and that no arrests have been made since the formation of the JIT. The JIT’s investigation is still ongoing, with a substantial reduction in the campaign of making allegations since the formation of the team.
