The February 8 general election in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be heavily secured with thousands of security forces, as Pakistan faces increased militant activity. The polls have already been marred by allegations of pre-poll rigging and violence, with former prime minister Imran Khan jailed and barred from running. In the first week of February, 5,000 paramilitary Frontier Constabulary (FC) forces will deploy to the KP bordering Afghanistan, while additional police teams will be deployed at polling stations on voting day. The security situation is deteriorating, with reports of attacks on candidates and a rising tide of crime. Last year saw casualties hit a six-year high, with more than 1,500 civilians, security forces, and militants killed. The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) poses the biggest threat, with accusations that the Kabul government is harboring TTP fighters. This situation has led to deadly attacks, including a mosque bombing and a military base attack in Peshawar.
