PML-N Senator Ishaq Dar stated that the demand for holding general elections within 90 days after the National Assembly’s dissolution was unconstitutional. He made this comment following an agreement between President Dr Arif Alvi and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold elections on February 8, 2024, which exceeds the constitutional timeframe by two months. The Constitution mandates that elections be held within 90 days of the assembly’s dissolution. However, the Elections Act states that constituencies must be delimited after each official census is published. The ECP had previously ruled out elections this year due to the need for fresh delimitation. In a Senate session, PTI Senator Shahzad Waseem insisted on following the Constitution, while Ishaq Dar argued that other articles needed to be considered. Dar highlighted that the Council of Common Interests (CCI) had approved the census results and said that the ECP was obligated to conduct delimitation. He also mentioned funding and budgetary issues related to elections and emphasized the importance of fair elections with a level playing field for all contestants. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari congratulated the nation on the announcement of the election date and expressed his concerns about a level playing field for all political parties. He also mentioned that the PPP had not yet decided on forming an electoral alliance with the PTI.
