Pakistan: Local Government By-Polls Underway in Sindh

Polling for local government by-elections is currently taking place in 14 districts of Sindh. The Election Commission of Pakistan has appointed returning officers for 21 seats, with polling stations set up across the province. There are 163 polling stations in total, with 72 deemed “highly sensitive” and 89 “sensitive”. In Karachi, 121 polling stations have been established, with Mayor Murtaza Wahab and his deputy Salman Murad of the Pakistan Peoples Party among the candidates. The Provincial Election Commissioner has called for a free and fair election and a control room has been set up to monitor the process. The by-elections are being held to fulfill legal requirements for staying in office. The Sindh police have put in place a security plan, deploying thousands of officers and establishing a quick response force.
