Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has been hit with its worst-ever crisis as over 500 flights have been cancelled in the past 13 days due to fuel supply issues. The Pakistan State Oil (PSO) cut the fuel supply to PIA over unpaid dues. Despite making advance payments for fuel, the airline has had to cancel numerous domestic and international flights. PSO has refused to provide any credit or relaxation to PIA, leading to the airline scaling back its operations and only scheduling flights for which it has fuel arrangements. PIA has identified several priority destinations, including Canada, Turkey, China, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia. The airline’s spokesperson emphasized that privatization is not the solution to their existing problems and called on the government to form an independent board of directors.
