A post shared on social media claimed that Iran’s airstrike on Pakistan’s territory was made after talking to the Pakistani government, but no such talks took place before the incident. The post gained over 268,000 views and more than 7,700 reposts. However, a fact-check conducted by iVerify Pakistan found that the claim was false. The team analyzed an interview with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and press releases from both countries’ foreign ministries and determined that there were no talks before the January 16 attack. The claim misinterpreted the foreign minister’s statement and the available evidence pointed to a telephonic conversation taking place after the attack, not before it. The fact check was conducted in partnership with iVerify Pakistan, a project of CEJ and UNDP.
