Russia conducted heavy air strikes on Ukraine’s two largest cities, Kyiv and Kharkiv, killing at least five civilians and prompting calls for increased military assistance from the West. President Putin warned of retaliation for a Ukrainian air strike on a Russian city, which he claimed resulted in the deaths of 25 civilians. The attacks caused extensive damage, power outages, and numerous injuries. Ukraine downed several incoming missiles but called for additional support to combat the ongoing assaults. The outages brought back memories of the previous winter when air strikes on the energy grid caused frequent power cuts.
