Sweden has officially ended its decades-long neutrality by joining the NATO military alliance, in response to growing concerns about Russian aggression in Europe following the invasion of Ukraine. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized unity and solidarity as the country’s guiding principles as a new NATO member during a statement in Washington after meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The decision was hailed as a historic moment by Blinken, who received Sweden’s accession documents with the remark, “Good things come to those who wait.”
The move comes after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 prompted Sweden and Finland to apply for NATO membership, with fears of a Russian military threat mounting. Past incidents, such as Russian bomber planes flying close to Gotland and reports of a submarine in the Stockholm archipelago, highlighted Sweden’s vulnerability and lack of military preparedness.
