Tehran: Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has registered his name for the presidential election scheduled for June 28 following the passing of Ibrahim Raisi.

According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Iran’s official media outlets have reported that former hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has also registered for the presidential election.

The final list of presidential candidates will be issued on June 11, and Ahmadinejad’s name could also be blocked by the Council.

It should be noted that former member of the Revolutionary Guards, Ahmadinejad, was elected as the President of Iran for the first time in 2005 and completed his term in 2013.

Afterwards, he was barred from running by the Council in 2017, and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei had warned that participating in the presidential race is neither in his interest nor in the interest of the country.

Ahmadinejad had raised objections to Ayatollah Khamenei’s powers, leading to conflicts and in 2018, he demanded free elections while criticizing the Supreme Leader.

Despite protests in the country following Ahmadinejad’s re-election in 2009, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei had supported him, even though several people were killed and hundreds were arrested during the protests.
