The death of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa caretaker chief minister has sparked a debate on the procedure for appointing a new caretaker chief executive, as there are no explicit constitutional provisions for such a scenario. While some legal experts believe that the mechanism outlined in Articles 224 and 224-A can be used for the new appointment, others disagree. Former CM Mahmood Khan, who was involved in the initial appointment of the caretaker chief minister, has left the ruling party, adding another layer of complexity to the situation. The KP Governor has called for consultations with the former CM and opposition leader, and Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi has emphasized that there is no room for speculation in this process. The burden will now be on courts to interpret the constitutional provisions in this unique case.
