A district and sessions court in Lahore has granted the police a two-day physical remand of PTI president Parvez Elahi in connection with a case regarding illegal appointments at the Punjab Assembly. Last month, the Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) arrested Elahi on charges of appointing Muhammad Khan Bhatti as his principal secretary during his tenure as chief minister. The ACE claimed that the appointment of Bhatti was not in accordance with the law. Elahi has been arrested 11 times in various cases since June, following a crackdown on the PTI party. Today, Elahi was presented before the court of Judicial Magistrate Imran Abid under tight security. Elahi’s lawyers requested a delay in the proceedings due to their unavailability, but the investigating officer urged the court to hear ACE’s arguments. The ACE lawyer requested a 14-day physical remand for Elahi for further interrogation. The court reserved its verdict and directed the ACE to present Elahi in court on October 28. In a separate case related to illegally enhancing the crushing capacity of sugar mills, the court discharged Elahi due to a lack of evidence. The court stated that his discharge does not amount to acquittal or cancellation of the FIR, and the investigation of the case will continue.
