A judge in Kenya has ordered cult leader Paul Mackenzie and 30 others to undergo mental health evaluations before facing charges in the murder of 191 children whose bodies were found in the Shakahola forest. Mackenzie, the leader of the Good News International Church, allegedly instructed his followers to starve themselves and their children to death. More than 400 bodies have been exhumed, making it one of the worst cult-related tragedies in recent history. Prosecutors plan to charge a total of 95 people with murder, manslaughter, terrorism, and torture. Mackenzie, who has been in custody since the bodies were discovered, is said to be cooperating with the investigation. The judge granted the prosecution’s request for mental health assessments before the defendants are formally charged. The cult’s activities included forbidding children from attending school and preventing members from seeking medical help. Mackenzie had previously been convicted of producing and distributing films without a license.
