In a concerning incident, a man who was arrested for possession of narcotics was found dead in police custody in Karachi. The police claim that he died by suicide, but his family and activists believe it to be an extrajudicial killing. The incident has sparked protests from the suspect’s relatives and activists who are demanding justice.

According to police officials, the suspect was involved in cases related to narcotics possession and possession of counterfeit identification cards from sensitive institutions. The police surgeon, Dr. Summaiya Syed, confirmed the cause of death as suicide by hanging after conducting a post-mortem examination in the presence of a magistrate at Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi.

However, the family of the deceased is disputing the police’s claim. The suspect’s brother, Rehmatullah, stated that his brother had been working at a restaurant in Lyari and expressed concern over his cell phone being turned off for five days. He alleged that he received a call from his brother’s phone, made by the police, informing him of his brother’s supposed suicide in jail. Rehmatullah firmly believes that his brother was killed by the law enforcers.

The protests against the alleged extrajudicial killing have been organized by the suspect’s relatives and workers of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP). Arbab Durrani, a local leader of PkMAP, stated that the deceased was a party worker and had no involvement in criminal activities. He demanded an impartial investigation into the circumstances leading to the suspect’s death and called for justice against those responsible for the alleged killing.

The incident has raised concerns regarding police violence and the need for transparency and accountability within the criminal justice system. It is vital for a thorough investigation to take place to establish the truth and ensure justice for the suspect and his family.
