The armed wing of Hamas issued a warning that any Israeli soldiers who invade Gaza will not make it back alive. Despite increasing international calls for a ceasefire, Israel’s military has announced that its forces have surrounded Gaza City and are continuing their ground operations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that their forces were in the midst of battle and making progress. On the other hand, the Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing, stated that Gaza would be a historical curse for Israel, and any Israeli soldiers who enter the area would return home “in black bags”. These developments come after US President Joe Biden expressed support for a temporary humanitarian pause in fighting, while seven UN special rapporteurs called for a ceasefire due to concerns of a grave risk of genocide against Palestinians. The recent Israeli airstrikes on the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza have led to international condemnation, with at least 195 people killed and hundreds wounded. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights stated that these attacks could potentially be classified as war crimes. Overall, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has resulted in thousands of casualties on both sides.
