Israeli officials have revised the death toll from the Hamas attack on October 7 down to approximately 1,200 people, as they believe the original count of 1,400 included unidentified corpses now believed to be Hamas fighters. According to spokesperson Lior Haiat of Israel’s Foreign Ministry, the number was updated on Thursday and now reflects the official count of victims. The attack also resulted in more than 240 people being taken captive. In response, Israel has cut off access to food, electricity, and fuel for the residents of the Gaza Strip and has conducted a relentless bombing campaign, resulting in the displacement of more than 70 percent of the population and the deaths of 11,078 people, according to Palestinian authorities. The United Nations has criticized Israel’s actions as collective punishment and has noted the increasingly dire humanitarian conditions in the strip.
