South Africa is observing the 30th anniversary of its inaugural democratic election, known as Freedom Day, a pivotal moment in the nation’s history. In 1994, after years of segregation and white-minority rule, Black South Africans were able to exercise their right to vote for the first time, sparking optimism for a brighter future.

However, three decades later, the mood is less celebratory. Many feel disillusioned and skeptical, as the African National Congress, the ruling party since apartheid, faces accusations of broken promises and corruption. High unemployment, rampant crime, and persistent racial disparities continue to plague the nation.

As South Africa approaches this year’s general elections, there is speculation that the ANC may lose its majority for the first time, raising questions about its effectiveness in fulfilling its commitments. Has the ANC failed to deliver on its pledges?

Joining us to discuss these issues are political analyst Melanie Verwoerd, Democracy Works Foundation founder William Gumede, and activist and independent parliamentary candidate Zackie Achmat.
