In an effort to combat smuggling, hoarding, and illegal immigration, the Interim Interior Minister of Pakistan, Sarfraz Bugti, has announced that prize money will be given to citizens who provide information on these activities. Bugti made the announcement during a press conference held in Islamabad, stating that individuals who become informants and report cases of smuggling, hoarding (including of US dollars), and illegal immigrants will be eligible for the prize money. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) will lead the initiative in gathering information on illegal immigrants, with a toll-free number set up for Pakistanis to call and assist the government in its efforts.

Bugti acknowledged the government’s success in curbing smuggling, but also noted that culprits have resorted to hoarding and manipulating prices of essential commodities like wheat and sugar. He reassured the public that a crackdown is underway to address these issues. The entire government, including provincial governments, has pledged to take firm action against smuggling and hoarding, adopting a “zero-tolerance” policy. Those found guilty will be sent to jail, prosecuted, and face strict legal consequences. Bugti also emphasized that even members of the interior ministry involved in such activities will face severe punishments.

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar had previously announced an operation to curb cross-border smuggling across the country, which has shown positive results in the last 48 hours. The government faces pressure to address smuggling, as unchecked movement across the border has led to a significant increase in the prices of goods, particularly food items. Smuggling has also contributed to record-breaking sugar prices, with almost one million tonnes of sugar reportedly making its way across the border into Afghanistan over the past year.

The government’s initiatives aim to tackle these challenges and encourage citizens to actively participate in safeguarding the country against smuggling, hoarding, and illegal immigration. By offering prize money for information, Pakistan hopes to foster a sense of responsibility and create a united front against these unlawful activities.
