There is growing opposition to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India. A broad-based alliance called INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) has been formed to challenge the BJP in the upcoming elections. This alliance includes the Congress party, Trinamool Congress, and the Aam Aadmi party, among others. The unity of these diverse parties will be key in unseating the BJP and its allies.

The formation of INDIA marks a significant development in the relationship between national and regional opposition parties, who have historically struggled to unite due to power struggles and ideological differences. However, they have recognized the need to come together to have a viable chance against the BJP. The Congress party, in particular, has shown a willingness to not assert dominance and forgo the prime ministerial post.

The alliance will be focusing on a strategy to win the election, with the tagline “Jeetega Bharat” (India will win). The alliance aims to rebuild a more inclusive India by emphasizing democratic values, human rights, and social justice. They also pledge to protect the rights of minorities, such as Muslims and Christians, who have faced violence and discrimination in recent years.

The BJP has been successful in creating a narrative that blames Pakistan for any domestic issues or security concerns. This has poisoned public opinion and hindered efforts to improve relations between India and Pakistan. Reversing the effects of this toxic narrative will take time and effort.

Despite the unity of the opposition, they face an uphill battle in taking on Modi and the BJP. The BJP still enjoys significant popularity across India, and Modi’s personal charisma has swayed voters even in state elections. Additionally, the BJP has a large amount of funding and resources compared to other political parties.

Furthermore, during Modi’s tenure, opposition parties have faced harassment and investigations by state agencies. Opposition leaders have been jailed, weakening the opposition’s ability to challenge the BJP. Rahul Gandhi, the former leader of the Congress party, was disqualified from parliament and sentenced to jail, which critics argue was politically motivated.

Despite these challenges, the INDIA alliance is determined to bring about change in India. The alliance parties are committed to protecting democratic values, restoring social justice, and building a more inclusive and equitable India. Only time will tell if their efforts will be enough to defeat the BJP and bring about the change they seek.
