Former prime minister Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi were both granted bail in multiple cases related to the May 9 violence by an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi. The protests had erupted after Imran Khan was taken into custody by paramilitary Rangers from the Islamabad High Court. Social media was flooded with footage of rioting and vandalism at various locations during the protests. Both Imran and Qureshi had been arrested in connection with the protests. The bail was granted by ATC Judge Malik Asif Ejaz, who also rejected a prosecution plea for respite. Imran’s pre-arrest bail in seven cases related to the May 9 violence had been extended by a Lahore ATC just the day before.
