The Islamabad High Court (IHC) dismissed ex-premier Imran Khan’s request to suspend the trial court verdict in the Toshakhana case. The trial court had previously found the PTI chief guilty of “corrupt practices” and sentenced him to three years in prison. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had also disqualified Imran for five years. The IHC had suspended Imran’s sentence in the Toshakhana case on August 29, but when he sought suspension of the trial court verdict, the court said it would only suspend the sentence, not the conviction. Additionally, the IHC had also issued notice to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on a petition moved by Imran challenging the in-camera proceedings of the cipher trial at Adiala Jail. The IHC had previously scrapped the entire proceedings due to a lack of transparency and openness. In a recent hearing, Imran’s legal counsel requested a stay in the case, but the court did not immediately accept the plea and issued a notice to the FIA to submit its response.
