The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has indicted Irfan Nawaz Memon, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the capital, along with three other officials for contempt. This indictment is in relation to a case involving the prolonged detention of PTI members Shehryar Afridi and Shandana Gulzar under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance.

The hearing, presided over by Justice Babar Sattar, saw the court also indict Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) operations Jamil Zafar, Superintendent (SP) Farooq Buttar, and Station House Officer (SHO) Nasir Manzoor.

This development comes just a day after the court stripped the district magistrate of Islamabad of his powers to detain suspects under the MPO while considering the same petitions.

In a previous ruling on August 16, the IHC had allowed Afridi and Gulzar to be released and decided to indict the DC and SSP for contempt of court due to their “unsatisfactory” responses to the court.

More updates on this matter will follow.
