The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed serious concerns about the integrity and credibility of the Feb 8 elections. In a report released on Saturday, the HRCP called for an independent audit of the elections under the supervision of a parliamentary body. The report highlighted issues such as the nationwide shutdown of internet and cellular services on polling day, arbitrary changes in polling information, and the protracted delay in announcing election results. Additionally, the report raised concerns about discrepancies in post-polling procedures, such as the failure to display the statement of the count in polling stations and reports of candidates and observers being denied permission to witness the provisional consolidation of results.

The HRCP demanded an independent audit of the elections, emphasizing that security and intelligence agencies should not play a role in managing the electoral process. The commission also called for a parliamentary debate on the efficacy of the caretaker government scheme and insisted on the availability of seamless cellular and internet services on polling day. Furthermore, the HRCP demanded the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to publish all relevant forms in accordance with the Elections Act 2017. The HRCP emphasized the need for all parties to uphold and protect civilian supremacy through consistent, meaningful, and inclusive dialogue, noting that the true casualty of the elections has been democratic values and the rule of law.
