The UK government has announced its intention to ban the group Hizb ut-Tahrir, citing its anti-Semitic views and promotion of terrorism. Home Secretary James Cleverly stated that the group celebrates and praises attacks on Jewish people, and has called for the removal of the “Zionist occupiers”. The organization, which operates in 32 countries including the UK, has been banned in several other countries. If parliament agrees to the ban, Hizb ut-Tahrir will be designated as a terrorist organization, with supporting the group punishable by up to 14 years in prison. The decision has been welcomed by Labour Party Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, who stated that those who promote terrorism have no place in Britain. Hizb ut-Tahrir, however, has dismissed the move as a “sign of desperation”.
