The United Nations has reaffirmed the credibility of casualty figures provided by the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, in response to doubts raised by US President Joe Biden. Philippe Lazzarini, the chief of the UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA), stated that in previous conflicts, the figures were considered reliable and were seldom challenged. The Health Ministry obtains its data from morgues and hospitals, and recently released a comprehensive document containing the names and identities of those killed. Biden’s comments have faced criticism from Palestinian rights advocates, as Israel continues its intense bombardment of Gaza and exacerbates the humanitarian crisis. The Health Ministry has reported that over 7,326 Palestinians have been killed and more than 18,000 wounded since Israel initiated its attacks. Previous death tolls from Gaza conflicts have also been found to be accurate through independent investigations. Despite minor inaccuracies due to the volatile situation, the figures generally reflect the extent of casualties.
