A Spanish court has sentenced former Brazil international Dani Alves to four and a half years in prison and five years’ probation for raping a young woman at a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022. He was also ordered to pay 150,000 euros in compensation to the victim. Alves plans to appeal the ruling, maintaining that the encounter was consensual. The court ruled that the injuries found on the victim’s knees were “the result of the violence used by Mr. Alves” and considered her testimony consistent. Alves has been in detention since his arrest in January 2023, and Brazil does not extradite its own citizens when they are sentenced in other countries.
