Interim Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani has written letters to the United Nations, European Union, and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation expressing concern about the Indian Supreme Court’s ruling on the status of held Kashmir. The Supreme Court had ruled that the special status of held Kashmir was a temporary provision and directed the election commission to hold elections in held Kashmir by September 30, 2024. This move by India’s ruling party, Bharatiya Janata Party, to revoke occupied Kashmir’s special status was seen as an attempt to alter the demographic structure of the Muslim-majority region. FM Jilani has condemned the Indian authorities’ actions and deemed the recent judgement of the Supreme Court of India as a breach of international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The Foreign Office has stated that FM Jilani has called on the UNSC to ensure full implementation of its resolutions on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Additionally, Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir also raised the issue with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, highlighting that peace in South Asia is dependent on finding a solution aligned with UNSC resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. He also condemned illegal Indian efforts to change the status of Jammu and Kashmir, viewing it as a violation of UNSC resolutions.
