The image depicts Mahsa Amini, an Iranian Kurdish woman who died in custody. Her family has been prohibited from traveling to France to collect a top rights prize awarded posthumously, according to their lawyer. Amini died at 22 while being held for allegedly breaching Iran’s strict dress code for women. The European Union awarded Amini the Sakharov Prize, but her family was banned from leaving Iran to attend the ceremony. Despite the crackdown on protests in Iran, a global movement known as “Woman, Life, Freedom” continues to call for an end to the restrictions imposed by the Iranian government.
